Dallas Storm Season 2016: An Understory Network Summary

June 30, 2016 6:00 am Published by

In the first half of the 2016 storm season, the Understory Network in the Dallas area saw four damaging storms. Two of these storms were in March, one was in April and one was in May. Although the immediate area was spared the massive hail damage others experienced in the April 11, 2016, hailstorm, the March 23rd storm, brought damaging hail up to 2.15” to the area. Due to the high winds associated with this storm, heavy property damage was likely. During the March 8, 2016, and the May 10, 2016, storms, wind gusts approached 47-48 mph with sustained winds around 35 mph thus potentially causing damage to area vegetation and minor property damage. The storm that received the most attention was the April 11, 2016, hailstorm that caused massive damage to residents of Wylie, TX. This storm though was hyper-local and those within the Understory network were spared from any damaging hail and the wind speeds were high enough to cause some vegetation and minor damage to trees and branches.
