Who We Are
Welcome to Understory
Understory’s hail monitoring networks are made up of patent pending weather stations that detect rain, hail, wind and other weather events directly at the earth’s surface, where the risk to life and property is the greatest. While traditional radar-enabled weather centers collect data by analyzing conditions observed in the atmosphere, Understory’s ground-truth based detection is a marked enhancement in both resolution and fidelity, providing real-time datasets and graphical views of the movement and intensity of weather events, which leads to better insight and early detection of risks.
The data applications for Understory’s hail monitoring network are enormous, as $485 billion of the U.S. economy fluctuates with the weather. Learn more more about Understory’s patent-pending ground-truth weather stations that power our hail monitoring networks.
Our weather, wind and hail reports bring revolutionary change to how weather is understood.
At Understory, we are changing the future of how weather is understood and reported. Our ground breaking weather technology and revolutionary hail monitoring networks provide more weather data throughout the country than has ever been available. Our network of sensors reside on the surface, where dangerous weather happens. With Understory, customers are able to get hail reports by address so they can know exactly where storm damage occurred or how much rainfall occurred with a level of detail that is unprecedented. We call this ground-truth data and it’s changing the future of weather, wind and hail reports.
The difference between weather satellites, radar, and Understory’s hail monitoring networks
Traditional weather satellites are needed to forecast broad patterns, which is why they’re about 35,000 km above the surface of our planet. But dangerous weather is hyper-local. Radar measures what’s in the clouds, but hail, wind, and tornados all occur on the ground where it matters to you.
Understory captures the densest data, going from broad observations over kilometers to precise observations down to 100 meters. Each of our sensors is taking 3000 measurements per second on everything from wind speeds, rainfall and hail to temperature, heat index and much more. This weather data and analytics does not exist anywhere else. Understory is a new way of knowing about the weather by knowing the true story under the clouds.
Why do we need hyper-local weather data?
Weather impacts everything. The data applications for Understory’s sensors are enormous, as $485 billion of the U.S. economy fluctuates with weather. This new, sensor-enabled big data will impact insurance, agriculture, broadcast, and many other industries.
Industries impacted by weather
Why did we pick the name Understory?
An understory is the area in a rainforest beneath a forest canopy. Just like the rainforest, Understory’s revolutionary hail monitoring networks see the story underneath the clouds. They detect rain, hail, wind and other weather events directly at the earth’s surface, where the risk to life and property is greatest. While traditional, radar-enabled weather centers collect data by analyzing conditions observed in the atmosphere, Understory’s ground-truth-based detection is a marked enhancement in both resolution and fidelity, providing real time datasets and graphical views of the movement and intensity of weather, especially hail, events. This leads to better insight and early detection of risks.
